The Fashioner takes the reader on a journey through the various ways in which the arts can touch people’s lives. Drawing on inspirational quotations from the Bahá’í Writings, as well as interviews with a number of artists, this book explores the transformative power of the arts. Lepard discusses architecture, photography, music, dance, theater, and painting, and looks at the way in which Bahá’í artists have applied principles of the Faith to their art. The community building process happening within the global Bahá’í community today, and the ways in which the arts can be used to inspire and enhance these activities, are also discussed. It is hoped that this book will serve as encouragement for anyone wishing to more deeply understand and connect to the creative arts and find ways to explore their use in Bahá’í activities and community life.

"The Fashioner" Offers Something for Everyone

Review by Anne Gordon Perry on 6/9/2018

In an insightful, articulate exploration of the importance and use of the arts, Jenina Lepard has given us a valuable compendium of material that can illumine our own understanding, inspire the development of talents and capacities, and foster worldwide community building. Grounded in her own experience and reflections, Lepard also presents the wide scope of how the Baha'i Faith views the transformational potential of the arts, voices appreciation for various artists and art forms, and shows us how we might all benefit from including the arts in our core activities, feasts, and holy days—and in our lives in general. We have long needed such a resource, which offers both theoretical and practical wisdom, and can anticipate the time period when the arts will flower and will help the Faith spread "like wildfire." Lepard skillfully relates this future time to the "energizing influence of Baha'u'llah's mere revelation of the word 'Fashioner.'" How can we not partake of this timely volume?
